To measure the alcohol % in water and alcohol liquid only !  Each alcoholmeter reads correct  for a special temperature, marked on the meter. The expansion of liquid is subject to temperature and therefore the alcoholmeter reading, at the same strength, change by changing temperature. (Temperature stated on the scale) Widder alcoholmeters are made for the temperature 20 C = 68F ! Therefore you have to control the temperature after each reading. The combined alcoholmeter with incorporated thermometer has an correction scale on the thermometer. Now  you do not need do worry about temperature so much. See instruction of alcoholmeters.   

Example: Reading 40 % vol. at temperature 6C  = 40 + 5 = 45 - The actual strength is 45 % vol.
